Less than an hour southeast of Portland, this small Willamette
Valley community is home to the Molalla Buckeroo, one of the oldest
rodeos in the West. Historic 1800s homes include the Dibble House
and Fred Vonder Ahe House museums, and the stately Hoffman House
Restaurant, where you can find good old-fashioned home cookin'. The
nearby Molalla River Corridor offers views of amazing basalt rock
outcroppings and provides access to fishing, swimming, biking and
kayaking. It also is the gateway to the spectacular Table Rock
Wilderness. The Shady Dell miniature railroad park features real
steam engines -- great fun for kids to ride.

The Ross family (a "posse" of mom, dad and four
daughters) has embarked on a new adventure: raising elk.
Fortunately, owners Brenda and Alan Ross like to share
and have opened up their beautiful 4,800-square-foot
home to a few lucky guests. They offer a unique "farm
experience" with extraordinary warmth and graciousness.
Brenda and the girls will lead you on a tour of the
farm, explaining everything about their remarkable
creatures. Watch elk feeding, or calving and rutting
depending on the season. (Check the Web site for
calendar of activities.) There's a petting zoo with
sweet animals, including miniature donkeys and pygmy
goats. You can even pet the turkeys. Tours are gladly
arranged for day visitors. But when you can wake and see
elk frolicking in the fields, you might want to consider
staying overnight at this friendly farm.
Sleeping Around the NW appears the first and third
